Why Is the ACT Changing?

The ACT is evolving to better meet the needs of today’s students. The updates focus on reducing test anxiety, modernizing the experience, and allowing students to tailor their test based on their college goals.

• Shorter Exam, Less Stress: A more streamlined format with fewer questions.
• Optional Science Section: You now have the option to skip the science section, unless you’re pursuing a STEM path.
• Online First: These changes roll out on digital versions first, allowing more scheduling flexibility.

Key ACT Updates Starting in 2025

✅ 1. A Shorter Test Format

The test is being trimmed down by 44 questions total. That means less fatigue and more focus!

• English: 50 questions, 35 minutes
• Math: 45 questions, 50 minutes
• Reading: 36 questions, 40 minutes
• Science (Optional): 40 questions, 40 minutes
• Writing (Optional): 1 prompt, 40 minutes

✅ 2. Science Section Becomes Optional

You can now choose whether or not to take the Science section. If you’re applying to STEM programs, we recommend including it to keep your application strong.

✅ 3. Revised Composite Score

Starting April 2025 (online) and September 2025 (paper), your ACT Composite Score will include only English, Math, and Reading. Science (if taken) will be reported separately.

✅ 4. More Time per Question

With fewer total questions, you’ll have more time to think through each one—reducing pressure and improving focus.

✅ 5. Fewer Math Answer Choices

The Math section will now feature four answer choices instead of five—making the process of elimination a little easier!

✅ 6. Removal of the Field-Test Section

No more “Test 5” experimental section for online testers starting April 2025. That’s even less time in the test room.

What’s Staying the Same

• Scoring Scale: The familiar 1–36 ACT scale isn’t changing.
• Writing Section (Optional): Still available if you want to showcase your essay skills.
• Superscoring Continues: You can still combine your best section scores across test dates.
• Valid Past Scores: No changes to previous ACT test scores

When Will These Changes Happen?

• April 2025: Online test-takers in the U.S. get the new format first.
• September 2025: Paper-based ACT and international test-takers will follow.
• Spring 2026: Statewide/district school-day testing adopts the changes.
